Classroom Expectations

Ponderosa High School has an exceptional woodworking shop with a large variety of commercial grade equipment. For this reason, safety is extremely important in the shop. Many pieces of equipment have additional safety features installed to minimize risk for students. However, it is the student’s responsibility to not only look out for the safety of themselves but also of the other students around them.

Students are required to complete in class safety trainings with 100% accuracy before the use of any tools. Students are also required to complete SP2 Construction each semester. Failure to complete SP2 by Friday August 16th will result in being removed from the class.

A primary safety device we use in our shop is a Sawstop table saw. This saw is engineered to jam a brake into the blade in the instance that someone were to touch the moving blade. This tool protects each student in the event they have an accident. In the event of an accident, parents will be notified of the occurrence, and it will be the responsibility of the student/student’s family to cover the cost of repairing the saw. The cost of the repair is $175, which covers a new brake and blade. This is not a common occurrence as it only happens in the event of a major error. If you have further questions regarding this please email or call me.

Student Professionalism

A primary focus of the industrial arts department is equipping students for the real world. Going to class and actively working is considered the students job. Class participation, and professionalism will be a large weight of the students grade. Expectations of the student include showing up to class on time, working on projects, using safe practices, proper use of tools and equipment, cleaning up every day, and being respectful to other students.

Students will start with 200 points in their professionalism grade category. As long as the students continue to act professional, they will retain their points. However, students will lose points in this category for tardiness, unexcused absences, not actively working during class time, unsafe work practices, disrespectful attitudes, stealing projects, not being able to work, etc. Basically put, things that will get a student reprimanded or fired in a job will be noted in the professionalism category of their grade.

This is a fluid category that can change drastically throughout the semester. Students can both lose and earn back points in this category, at the instructor's discretion.

Assignments

If caught cheating it will result in a zero and a loss of professionalism points. All assignments and projects must be completed by the given due date, regardless of absences. Students will have 24hrs to turn in their assignments for half credit. After 24hrs, no credit will be given, unless discussed for special circumstances. Students are responsible for checking their canvas and turning in assignments on time. Grades will NOT be rounded at the end of the quarter or semester. Any extra credit must be turned in before finals week starts.

Grading Criteria/Grade Weight

Grade Criteria Grade Weight
A 90-100% Professionalism 30%
B 80-89% Completed Projects 40%
C 70-79% Assignments 20%
D 60-69% Final 10%
